St. Mark UMC in Columbus will be hosting a Bridges to Healing seminar on Saturday, November 6 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Bridges to Healing is a program that seeks to equip churches to minister to the active and retired military and veterans in their midst.
The focus of Bridges to Healing is to recognize the military as a legitimate subculture in our churches and to address their unique issues. One of these issues causing severe difficulty today is Combat Trauma. While it begins as an individual issue, it quickly balloons into the family and community. The symptoms seen are usually divorce, suicide, homelessness and substance abuse. Our churches are already ministry centers, but many have not understood the unique needs of their military members.
Leading this one-day seminar will be Military Ministry staff from around the country. One of the primary speakers will be Nate Self, a decorated Army Ranger and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) sufferer.
The seminar is planned to coincide with the return of the 3rd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division from Iraq in October/November to Fort Benning.
There is no charge for participants to attend the seminar. Lunch will be provided onsite. The seminar will consist of a three one hour plenary sessions where leaders will acquaint participants with some of the problems facing military and their families. Following a working lunch, which is provided onsite, participants will take part in a question and answer session with the presenters. The day will conclude with breakout sessions in three or more areas.
Bridges to Healing is sponsored by Military Ministry, a Division of Campus Crusade for Christ, the USO, the American Association of Christian Counselors, Family Life and Air Compassion for Veterans.
