Rev. Charles Augustus Culbreth passed away on Sat., March 3, 2012, in Thomasville, after an extended illness. Rev. Culbreth graduated from Albany High School, 1948, (President of Senior Class). He graduated from Emory University, BA, 1952. Knowing from an early age of his call to our Savior’s ministry, he attended Chandler School of Theology, Emory, M.Div., 1955. At Emory, he was president of ATO Fraternity, 1951; member of Student Council; Chairman of Emory Religious Emphasis Week, 1953. His appointments were Bloomfield Methodist Church, Macon, 1955; Plains Methodist Charge, 1959;  First Methodist Church, Folkston, 1963; Pinson Memorial Methodist Church, Sylvester, 1967; Epworth United Methodist Church, Columbus, 1971; First United Methodist Church, Sylvania, 1973; First United Methodist Church, Cairo, 1978; First United Methodist Church, Waycross, 1983. He took a Sabbatical Leave for Travel and Study in 1985, and served as vice president of Planned Giving for Magnolia Manor in Americus from 1986 until his appointment as Superintendent of Epworth By the Sea in 1989. Always active in community affairs, he was involved in Rotary Clubs in Sylvania, Cairo, Waycross and Americus; Kiwanis Club in Columbus and Sylvester; served as a Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America in Plains and Chaplain for Chehaw Council. He served as president of Athletic Booster Clubs, in both Folkston and Sylvester. He was honored as Man of the Year by Chamber of Commerce of Cairo and Grady County in 1980. If a day came and he had five minutes of free time, he could be talked into a little golf, fishing, hunting or biking. Easy to know and love, Charlie made friends with each person with whom he met. He saw each day as a new wonderful day to serve the Almighty. Affectionately known as a “Community Pastor.”” he patrolled the town each day, uplifting the glorious name of the Savior and being an encourager to all people. His smile was his trademark. One friend said that you did not have to turn on the lights when he came into a room, his smile brightened the whole place, and Charles Culbreth set the standard for ministers. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Whiting Culbreth, of Cairo; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles A. Culbreth III (Chip) and wife, Denise Roberts Culbreth, of Thomasville; Scott A. Culbreth and wife, Jennifer Tanner Culbreth, of Kinston, N.C.; grandchildren, Drew Culbreth, of Atlanta; Jay Culbreth, of Costa Rica; Mollie Culbreth Conner and husband, Douglas, Sarah Culbreth, Paige Culbreth, all of Kinston, N.C.; and Kaitlyn Roberts, Logan Roberts, both of Thomasville. Services for Rev. Charles Augustus Culbreth Jr. will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at First United Methodist Church, Cairo, with the Rev. Richard Soper and the Rev. Rick Turner officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo. Active pallbearers will be Charles Stafford, Patrick Ouzts, Berl Hawthorne, Jarrell McClenny, George Hackney and Richard VanLandingham. Honorary pallbearers will be all ministers attending services, Wyman Richter, John B. Wight, Robert Sellers, Edgar Smith and David Stallings.
