Director of Student Ministries - Waycross First UMC


Job Description Waycross First has a full-time ministry opportunity for a gifted and called person to develop our Student Ministries program (primarily grades 5-12). We are looking for a team member to build young disciples for Christ by creating and implementing a comprehensive student ministry, including worship, discipleship, and mission, while serving as a spiritual leader and role model for the students. Waycross is located in south/central Georgia with close proximity to Savannah, St. Simons Island, and Valdosta, Georgia as well as Jacksonville, Florida. It is a quiet, southern town nestled on the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp. Our Student Ministries will primarily reach students from two high schools and three middle schools. Qualifications Spiritual • Profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior • Full engagement in a Christian lifestyle, including regular worship, personal spiritual growth, and a lifestyle of tithing and generosity • A United Methodist background is not required, but the team member must be in agreement with the standards, theology, and policy of The United Methodist Church Education • High school diploma with at least of two additional years of work or educational experiences (college, military, etc.) necessary • Seminary not required • Age must meet the United Methodist Safe Sanctuaries guidelines Experience • Previous involvement with leading others in some type of worship/discipleship/spiritual educational environment desired Personality • People-oriented personality with ability to work well with others • Embrace an entrepreneurial spirit in developing a student ministries program • Possess a teachable, relational spirit • Innovative, creative, outside-the-box thinker Responsibilities • Passion for and ability to create an inclusive and welcoming environment • Integrating media and technology as needed to engage and grow • Interactively and intentionally teach students (both biblical and United Methodist traditions) in weekly gatherings (Sunday School, Student Nights, etc.) • Create and plan special events: yearly mission experience, quarterly worship events or trips (Gathering Place Sunday’s, rafting, skiing), etc. • Regularly visit student schools, including extracurricular activities (sporting events, performances, competitions, etc.) • Connect with parents and communicate to them as appropriate • Introduce new areas of worship or learning as appropriate (example: contemporary music, local service projects, mission trips) • Assist church staff when needed around the facility and contribute to Sunday morning worship services or other special events (Maundy Thursday, Christmas Cantata, etc.) • Be a self-starter, with commitment to excellence and enthusiasm for growth • Work as an agent of change, not a guardian of the status quo • Relocation is preferred but commuting could be considered • Stay in close communication with and report to Senior Pastor and youth advisory council (YAC) • Attend staff meetings, Administrative Board, and YAC meetings Compensation • Full-time (with hours being flexible based on student schedules) • Salaried (negotiable depending on experience) • Mileage reimbursement for work related travel (visitation, continuing education, field trips, etc) • Office on church premises (computer, phone, internet, printer, etc.) • Vacation negotiated by Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) and Pastor • Continuing education may be approved by SPRC and Pastor Applications • For questions, contact chairman of Staff Parish Relations Committee, Martin Bell • Applications should include a cover letter and resume; they can be mailed or emailed 912-286-1071 Martin C.
