Bishop King to visit all nine districts for Bishop's Hour

8/17/2010

Bishop James R. King, Jr., episcopal leader of the South Georgia Conference, will be visiting all nine districts this fall for the 2010 Bishop’s Hour.
The Bishop’s Hour is designed to be an intentional time for Bishop King to be in each district sharing with both laity and clergy.

“It is in my heart to be with the people of South Georgia. And as much as I desire to personally be in every local church, it is just not possible,” said Bishop King. “The Bishop’s Hour is an opportunity for me to come close to the laity and clergy of each district, and for me to fulfill the teaching role that is intended to flow out of the office of Bishop.”

Each Bishop’s Hour will include a time of singing followed by a teaching session. This year’s teaching session will flow out of the Annual Conference theme of “Sowing the Word.”

“This theme points to one essential dimension of being a disciple of Jesus Christ,” said Bishop King. “We are to embrace the scriptures so we can then sow the Word in the lives of others.”

Bishop King instituted the Bishop’s Hour last year with very positive feedback from the laity and clergy who attended.

“Over and over again I heard people from our district say that they were inspired by the music, Bishop King's words, and just being together with over 500 United Methodists from across the Waycross District,” said Rev. Marcia Cochran, Waycross District Superintendent. “One woman said to me, ‘The laity are hungry for this kind of gathering when our spirits are fed.’"

Churches are encouraged to gather a group and make plans to attend the Bishop’s Hour in their district.

“Last year was such a blessing for me. It is my prayer that as many laity and clergy as possible will meet with me again and invite others to come for this time of spiritual inspiration and instruction,” said Bishop King.
