Clergy and laity will gather at 2010 Black Church Summit

8/31/2010

The 2010 Black Church Summit, a gathering for clergy and laity from black churches across the South Georgia Conference, is set for September 23-25, at Vision of Jesus United Methodist Church in Macon.

The theme for the Summit is “Reaching New People for Christ.”  Featured preachers for the three-day event are the Rev. Candace Lewis and Dr. Winston O. Worrell.

“This summit is designed to encourage, to inspire and to inform clergy and laity around the various ways to engage in evangelism,” said Rev. Doreen Smalls, associate director of Connectional Ministries and Summit coordinator.  “Each session will focus on a different method, such as internet, radio, missions or community partnerships.  It is an exciting opportunity for everyone to learn how to reach more people.  The more persons we can reach for Christ, the more we can grow a Christlike world!”

Rev. Lewis, a sought-after preacher, leader, coach, consultant and passionate servant of the church, is an ordained elder from the Florida Annual Conference. Upon graduation from Gammon Theological Seminary, she was appointed to plant a new church. She and a team of committed laity have spent the last 12 years successfully planting the New Life Community United Methodist Church, an African-American congregation in Jacksonville, Fla. Their new book, “A New Way - Planting, Starting & Revitalizing Ministries,” will soon be available through Discipleship Resources.

Dr. Worrell serves as Director of the World Methodist Evangelism Institute, a ministry of the World Methodist Council and Emory University, where he has served for the past 18 years.  He holds a doctorate in evangelism from Emory University. Dr. Worrell’s most recent text is “Becoming More Missional for Christ: An Organizing Model,” a nine-session training workbook designed to help local congregations and individual Christians create and carry out their holistic missional ministry for Jesus Christ.

Rev. Reggie Williams, Senior Pastor of Vision of Jesus United Methodist Church, is the Dean of the 2010 Black Church Summit.  Rev. Denise Walton, Senior Pastor of South Columbus United Methodist Church, will be the 2010 Summit Preacher.  Other leaders for the Summit include Rev. Marcia Williams, Senior Pastor of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church, leading “Reaching People Through Community Partnerships;” Mr. Jeremy Wilson, youth director at Forest Hills United Methodist Church, leading “Reaching People Through the Internet;” and Mr. Derick Greene, manager of Clear Channel Radio Station, leading “ Reaching People Through Radio.”

Cost for the event is $35.  Banquet tickets are an additional $20 for Summit participants, and $25 for those attending the banquet only.  A special hotel rate of $77 per night for Black Church Summit participants has been secured with LaQuinta Inn & Suites, Macon West (4615 Chambers Road).  A $30 housing scholarship will be automatically applied to that amount each night to help cover the hotel cost.
