Macon Outreach at Mulberry Brings Community Together

12/16/2009

Macon Outreach at Mulberry hosted a special community Thanksgiving worship service and turkey dinner on Friday, November 20.  More than 300 meals were served during the event, which was held at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church.

“The Thanksgiving dinner is different from the other 52,000 meals we serve during the rest of the year to the homeless and hurting of our community,” said Johnny Hathcock, Executive Director of Macon Outreach.  “It’s a time of celebration, and a true testament to the relationships being built in our community where we all live.  Bringing people together, whose paths may never cross otherwise, is what Macon Outreach is all about. We support and encourage one another in a safe and comfortable environment. Thanksgiving is a time to offer acknowledgement of God’s blessings in our lives.”

Volunteers from around the community, including Bishop James King and several South Georgia District Superintendents, helped prepare and serve the meal to guests.

Rev. Tommy Martin, Mulberry Street UMC’s senior pastor, shared an inspiring message, and special music was provided by Doris Andrews and Donald Richardson.

For many who live in poverty and count on Macon Outreach for support, the Thanksgiving meal they enjoyed at Macon Outreach may be their only Thanksgiving dinner.

Following the example of Jesus, the mission of Macon Outreach at Mulberry is to address physical and spiritual hunger, enhance human dignity, and offer hope for the future to disadvantaged people in Macon and surrounding communities.  Founded in 1971, the ministry provides hope and help through the following services, all at no cost to guests:  daily meal program, Monday through Friday, serving 1,000+ meals per week to the homeless and hungry; emergency grocery pantry, providing food each week to 80+ families in-need; full-service clothes closet; Ready, Set, Go! skill assessment and training program for recently unemployed individuals; prison library ministry; limited direct assistance (by referral and appointment only).
