2014 Confirmation Retreat set for March 14-16

Connectional Ministries, in partnership with Epworth By The Sea on St. Simons Island, will again offer youth from around the South Georgia Conference the opportunity to learn, worship and fellowship at their annual Confirmation Retreat.

Set for March 14-16, 2014, registration for the event will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. The registration deadline is Feb. 28. 

Designed for students in the fifth grade and above, the “Join the Journey” Confirmation Retreat will provide churches of all sizes an opportunity to connect with others through worship, study and fellowship. In addition to workshop sessions that will cover topics like discipleship, rules to live by and United Methodist lingo, the event will also include large group gatherings that focus on the church seasons and God’s grace.

“This weekend retreat will show students the right path in our search to know more about our United Methodist heritage and our Savior, Jesus Christ,” said Allison Lindsey, associate director of Connectional Ministries.

Not meant to be the only confirmation youth go through, the Confirmation Retreat should complement the different curriculums and models that a church is or will be doing.

Workshop topics include:

Talkin' Funny / Mumbo Jumbo will help attendees understand and define the words used in United Methodism, including Wesleyan terms, organizational terms, titles, and more. Confirmands will gain a greater sense of organization and understanding of key people and terms.

Three Simple Rules is a study of the General Rules that were observed by the Methodist societies of John Wesley and that are found in the United Methodist Book of Discipline. Students will explore what it means to do no harm, to do good, and to attend upon all the ordinances of God.

Packing for the Journey will help students learn about things they will need on their “journey” of faith. They will learn about what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus, how to grow in that relationship, and why it is important to serve others because of that relationship.

Also offered during the weekend will be a “Holy Club" highlight.

The Holy Club, formed by John Wesley in 1729, was a small group of individuals who studied the Bible together in a “methodical” way. Today’s small-group Bible studies are based on these Holy Clubs.

During this year’s Holy Club highlight, confirmands will explore the ministry of small groups and loving accountability and learn about the importance of being surrounded by Christian friends who can hold them accountable through prayer, fellowship, Bible study and service.

The large group general session gatherings will take place in Strickland Auditorium and will include high-energy music, drama, a speaker, individual church time for discussion, multi-media presentations, and youth involvement. The following church seasons will theme each of the general sessions: Advent and prevenient grace, Lent/Good Friday/Easter and justifying grace, and Pentecost and sanctifying grace.

Participants also have the opportunity to be part of the global fight against malaria, one of the largest killers of children in Africa. By collecting coins prior to the weekend and giving them during Sunday morning’s worship service, students will save lives by helping purchase much-needed mosquito bed nets.

“It is awesome to pull in so many different individuals from across South Georgia to speak for our general sessions, teach workshops, and lead worship for the weekend,” Lindsey said. “How exciting it is to be a part of this crossroad in the lives of our youth as they make the decision to confirm their faith, baptism and claim the name United Methodist. The retreat setting offers leaders a balance of worship, diving deeper in God's amazing grace and free time to bond with their group away from their routines. The focus can be life-changing!”
