"Crop Drop" mission event planned during Annual Conference session

5/17/2015

To complement the Annual Conference theme of “We’re Better Together” from Matthew 18:20, the Office of Connectional Ministries is partnering with the Society of St. Andrew to host a Crop Drop mission outreach event from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, June 5.

The Crop Drop will be a hands on mission project that will allow Annual Conference participants and guests to join together to make mesh sacks and sort and bag nearly 10,000 pounds of donated local produce. The food will be distributed by the Society of St. Andrew, a nonprofit hunger relief organization that saves excess fresh produce and donates it to critical feeding agencies, to local individuals, and food banks.

“Our Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event at our 2013 Annual Conference session was a great success,” said Allison Lindsey, associate director of Connectional Ministries. “Those who participated really enjoyed the connection in action and the hands-on experience. More than 30,000 meals were packaged by all ages that day and we had fun in the process! I think this will be a similar experience.”

The Crop Drop will be in memory of Art Shoemaker. Shoemaker, a member of Avalon United Methodist Church in Albany, died in February and was very involved on the on the local, district and conference levels with the Society of St. Andrews and the Scouting program.

The Crop Drop will be held on the grounds of the UGA Tifton Conference Center. More specific directions will be given during the Annual Conference session.  Participants can drop in anytime during the 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. mission event or stay as long as they would like.
