Update on September 1:

To the South Georgia Conference:

I have said before that it is times like these that we see just how very "Alive Together in Christ" we are! Thank you for the outpouring of prayer and support for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. We are seeing a tremendous response across South Georgia in very tangible ways.

As we move into this Labor Day weekend, I want to provide an update and new information around our response to Hurricane Harvey for Texas and Louisiana.

The Bishop has encouraged local churches to take up a special offering, which will be sent to the Texas conferences experiencing this devastation. The following inserts can be used to help promote this in your local churches.

Update on August 28:

From the Bishop

We in South Georgia know the lasting impact of kind words, good deeds, of prayers made on our behalf. Even if we had not had three disaster events in our Annual Conference within the past year, the South Georgia Conference would want to reach out in every way to our brothers and sisters in the Houston area. But those recent disasters have made us even more determined to respond with support in very tangible ways.

We know how much it meant to us for individuals, churches, and annual conferences to come to our aid. Now we have the opportunity to stand side by side as United Methodists in ministry to all those in the areas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

As conferences from across the country offer support and await an invitation to assist the Early Response Teams and disaster coordinators in Harvey cleanup and recovery efforts, listed below are five ways you can respond now. Please share these with your church.

In addition, I would like to encourage the local churches of South Georgia to set Sunday, September 10 as a day to receive a special offering for disaster relief in Texas and to involve the congregation in making cleaning and/or hygiene kits for use in the long weeks and months of recovery. Specific directions may be found below.

Thank you, South Georgia United Methodists, for the ways in which you continue to be Alive Together in Christ.

Lawson Bryan
