South Georgia Annual Conference Trustees Invest in Development Fund

11/2/2010

As part of its investment strategy, the South Georgia Annual Conference Trustees recently purchased eight, 4-year certificates from the Georgia United Methodist Foundation Development Fund.

“We chose to invest in the Foundation because of the ways these monies are invested back in our local churches,” said Dr. Rick Lanford, chair of the South Georgia Annual Conference Trustees Investment committee. “We also respect the leadership and the integrity of the Foundation’s staff.”

Since September, the Development Fund has received over $1.7 million in new investments from United Methodist churches, entities and individuals. Every dollar invested provides a source of funding for the Foundation to offer low-interest loans to United Methodist ministries wishing to refinance debt or build, expand or renovate their facilities.

Lanford, who serves as president of The Foundation of The Methodist Home of the South Georgia Annual Conference, identified an additional factor in the committee’s decision. “We also know that not only are we investing in the Foundation, but that the Foundation is investing in the South Georgia Annual Conference by sharing with laity how they can best invest their assets in order to give back to the kingdom,” he said. “Whether they create a charitable remainder trust or a donor advised fund, laity can diversify their gifts with one Methodist entity, rather than a secular institution, to support the ministries of our Annual Conference.”

Lanford is such a firm believer in the Development Fund that he and his wife plan to purchase certificates as well. “We want to do this because we believe in The United Methodist Church,” he said. “It is a great rate for an incredible return because the return is that souls are being won to the kingdom. What greater glory can that be?” New investors will earn competitive returns on 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-year certificates.

The Foundation helps churches, agencies and individuals within the North and South Georgia conferences multiply financial resources for mission and ministry by providing investment, lending, planned giving and fundraising services.
