South Georgia School of Christian Mission
Study Leaders 2009 
 
Rev. Dr. Charles Cravey is originally from Telfair County, Georgia (McRae). He is married to Renee Dennis Cravey. Currently the South Georgia Conference Coordinator for United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, Charles won the coveted Golden Hammer award in 1997 for his work in the mission field. He has made many mission trips. He is also a published writer and songwriter. He has a Ph.D. in Theology, a Master’s Degree in Sacred Literature and a B.S. in Sociology. Charles has taught the basic and advanced lay speaking classes on numerous occasions across the Conference and brings excitement as well as new paradigms to our understanding of what lay speaking is all about.
 
BJ Cutts has a long history with the United Methodist Women, dating back to 1954 when she became a member with her mother. After college her working career was spent in the public schools as a teacher and then, as a school counselor for 30 years. BJ lives in Blairsville Georgia as does her family: two sons and daughter-in- law, two granddaughters, Ansley 9 and Macey, 7. BJ is a member of the United Methodist Women and St. Clare’s Episcopal Church, where she is a Vestry person, Chair of the Children and Youth Christian Education Committee, and Lay Eucharistic Minister.  BJ is of Native American ancestry which has had great influence on her philosophy of environmental, social and spiritual concerns.  She has been a Study Leader in 6 other Conferences and is extremely pleased to be a member of the South Georgia Team this year.  
 
Allison Eastin is active in the South Georgia Annual Conference chairing South Georgia Annual Conference Confirmation Retreats, teaching children's bible studies KIDZQUEST, and workshops for children's leaders at Conference Pathway Events. She serves as Director of Children's Ministry, Douglas First United Methodist Church. Allison served on Conference Safe Sanctuaries Design Team and assisted in training events in our 9 districts. The 2007 Recipient of the LaGrange College Lay-Servant Leadership Award, Allison has 2 children Emily (15), and Brady (11). Allison enjoys music and reading. 
  Jamie Gibson has taken 18 international trips and has served on countless local and regional disaster response teams since taking her first international UMVIM trip to Belize in 1990. She has served as both a team member and team leader on trips to Belize, Cuba, Costa Rica, Montserrat, Nicaragua, Panama, Antigua, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, and Spain. Although she has dug holes and laid tile, served on medical teams and hugged countless children in VBS, her special passion involves projects to empower women and children. Jamie is currently teaching women in several different countries to build and use a solar oven. She is active in Disaster Response and is an UMCOR certified Trainer for future members of Early Response Teams. Jamie and her husband John have 2 wonderful sons and three precious grandchildren
  Addie Haynes currently serves as the President of the Virginia Conference United Methodist Women. She also serves on the Common Table, Board of Laity, the Board of Global Ministries, and on the Board of Trustees for Ferrum College. Addie enjoys teaching in the Schools of Christian Mission, leading workshops on worship centers, older adult ministries, the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church, and spiritual gifts. Addie has held numerous offices in United Women on the district and local level and has been very active in her church as a Sunday School teacher, and leader of Discipleship groups, prayer groups, and Bible study groups.  An Interior Decorator and Antique Dealer, Addie is the wife of a retired school teacher, mother of a United Methodist minister, and grandmother.
  Rev. Dr. Kevin Haynes is a passionate advocate for United Methodist mission. He has served as study leader, assistant dean, and dean for the Virginia Conference School of Christian Mission. The pastor of Greenville United Methodist Church in the Staunton District of the Virginia Conference, Kevin has currently challenged his congregation to raise $20,000 for mission work in 2009. Before entering the ministry, Kevin received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from James Madison University and served as a band director in public education. After hearing the call the ordained ministry, Kevin received the Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Wesley Theological Seminary. Kevin’s three greatest joys are loving his wife, Beth, raising their son, Luke, and serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
  Rev. Earl James was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He is married to the former Sherryl Reeves of Sylvania, Georgia. They have two children, Reginald and Adrienne. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Millsaps College in Jackson and a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology, Emory University in Atlanta. Earl had served several appointments in the Mississippi, North Georgia, and South Georgia Conferences. He is currently serving as Senior Pastor of M.L. Harris United Methodist Church.
  Rev. Abra Lattany-Reed currently serves as the Associate Pastor to The Chapel, a United Methodist congregation in Brunswick. She has led small groups and special teams engaged in rural ministry. She currently serves on the board of directors for CASA Glynn, the YWCA of Brunswick, and is a member of the Brunswick Chapter of the Links, Inc. Abra has worked for the Federal Government for the past 26 years. She currently serves as a Supervisory Management Analyst for the Department of Justice with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. She and her husband Barry Reed have 4 daughters and 2 adorable grandsons.
  Rev. Shannon Clark Patterson is an Associate Pastor at Valdosta First United Methodist Church where she has been on staff as the Director of Student Ministries since 2000 and has been an Associate Pastor since 2006. Shannon oversees the youth ministries and “Solomon’s Porch,” an emerging worship service designed to reach the unchurched, ex-churched, and for people who love the church and ministers to people of all ages. Shannon’s primary goal as a pastor is to help people find ways they can serve others with the love of Christ through community service. Shannon is married to her super-hero husband, Drew. They love to read, watch sci-fi television shows, and serve the Lord together.
  Andris Salter currently serves as the Assistant General Secretary for Membership and Leadership. Andris has worked for the Women’s Division, General Board of Global Ministries for 27 years. A native of Richmond, Va, she has led workshops on racism, financial promotion, goal setting, leadership development, Committees on Nominations and membership. She has taught in numerous Conference/District Schools of Christian Mission, Regional Schools of Christian Mission, led retreats, and has spoken at annual meetings and other events. Andris’s previous responsibilities include coordinator of Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century, Executive Secretary for Environmental Justice, Assistant General Secretary for Administration. Her gifts and graces come from the understanding that God is the creator and guide of all things in her life and without God she could do nothing.
Barbara Tripp is an UMCOR consultant and helps with training events for annual conferences and Methodist Jurisdictions. She serves as a resource for conferences experiencing disaster situations. On behalf of UMCOR she is the Early Response Team coordinator working closely with UMVIM to improve and standardize the training across the country. Barbara previously served as the Executive Director of the disaster recovery ministries and MERCI in the North Carolina Conference. Through her association with the United Methodist Church and disaster response, Barbara has made presentations at conferences pertaining to disaster response. She has had disaster training through UMCOR, NC Conference, CISM, NOVA, NCMEA, NC Forestry Service, Church World Service, American Red Cross, Southern Baptist Men’s Association, and UMVIM. She and her husband have 3 daughters.
