WORK TEAMS STILL GREATLY NEEDED
The following are counties we know about that are in need of Early Response Work Teams. All work teams should call before going into an affected area and are asked to be self-contained, taking as many clean-up supplies as possible.

Lizella: The Lizella area of Bibb County is in great need of work teams at this time. Coordinators for this area are Carolyn Schomer of Trinity Warner Robins, Jaime Gibson of Pitts Chapel, and Reverend Bill Huddle from Dixon.  Those interested in going to help should call Lizella United Methodist Church (478-935-8649) or the pastor of Lizella, Rev. Rob McDaniel (478-787-3111 - cell).

Bloomfield: Bloomfield United Methodist Church in Macon is a host to Samaritan Purse as a disaster response site.  Persons interested in helping in early response effort -- clean up, debris removal, and chain-saw work -- should call Nicole Franklin at 1-828-262-1980 or go to www.samaritanspurse.org (then click on Volunteer Now -- Macon, Bibb County).

Bibb County: Early Response Teams able to go to Bibb County (Macon area) should contact Volunteer Macon at 478-742-6677. Cleanup efforts are being organized by the City of Macon.

Laurens County: Early Response Teams able to go to Laurens County (Dublin area) should contact Don Bryant, Agency Director for Laurens County Rural Fire and Emergency Management, at 478-277-2911.

Jefferson County: Early Response Teams able to help with debris removal and clean up teams in Jefferson County should contact  Don Rhodes, City Manager of Louisville, at jdradmin@bellsouth.net  / 478-625-3166 (O) / 706-360-2332 (C) or  Paul Bryan, County Administrator, 706-478-3322 / 706-831-8829.

Johnson County: Johnson County had tornadoes in both Wrightsville and Kite.  The county is working with two agencies to coordinate early response: Stewart Lang with the Georgia Baptists (706-988-2714) and Ms. Debbie Wynn with the American Red Cross (706-478-9407).

Disaster Response Update – May 13, 2008
South Georgia Tornadoes

Yesterday, Governor Sonny Perdue issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency in seven additional counties affected by tornadoes that struck on Sunday. The seven counties are Clayton, Crawford, Emanuel, Glynn, Jenkins, McIntosh, and Twiggs. The announcement follows an emergency declaration released on Sunday declaring six Georgia counties in a state of emergency: Bibb, Carroll, Douglas, Jefferson, Johnson and Laurens.

Because the damage is so widespread, government and faith-based disaster response leaders are challenged to quickly assess damage and implement an appropriate response. As counties transition from the emergency phase to the recovery phase it is taking some time to get appropriate responses organized. Therefore, information is still slim on ways to help at this time.

The Conference Disaster Response Team has been traveling today assessing damage in several counties and is involved in ongoing conference calls with GA-VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active is Disaster). They will be surveying more areas on Wednesday and will continue to release information as it comes to them.

The following are ways you can get involved now:

Disaster Response Update – May 12, 2008
South Georgia Tornadoes

As you are aware, a number of tornadoes touched down in South Georgia Saturday and Sunday causing loss of life and extensive property damage.  District Superintendents are in several locations assessing damage today. Rev. Lowery Brantley and Rev. Denise Walton will be traveling to some of the affected areas tomorrow.

If you have had damage in your area, we are asking that pastors contact their District Superintendent.  Because the damage is so wide spread we want to make sure we know which communities have been affected. The District Superintendents will then be in touch with the Disaster Response Committee.

Right now there has been no call for any teams. However, we do anticipate needing early response teams in several locations who can do initial clean-up.  If you have a team that is available for assignment, please send your contact information in an e-mail to both  lowery@sgaumc.com  and kelly@sgaumc.com.

The best way to help right now is financially.  You can send financial gifts through the Conference Treasurer's Office earmarked Advance Special #6796 - South Georgia Storm Recovery (Disaster Response).  The address is PO Box 52101 / Macon, Georgia 31208.

Please pray for the recovery and well-being of all those affected by these storms.

More information will be distributed as it become available.

Thank you.
