Did You Forget?

March 01, 2014

FROM THE BISHOP
JAMES R. KING, JR.

Hello, beautiful people of South Georgia!

Recently I watched a college basketball game in which a coach yelled to his team, “Talk! Talk!” One of the television commentators said, “The coach has a hard time getting the players to communicate with each other on the floor during a game because they are not accustomed to talking to each other directly.”

Social media is a wonderful tool but unless we are careful we can forget how to talk to each other.

Forgetting is a part of being human. We can forget to say I love you to someone dear to us. We can forget the promises we make to God and to each other. With hurried and hectic lives we can forget how to live healthy lives. Even when we acknowledge the goodness of God and how much we want to respond to God’s grace in our lives, we can forget that we are blessed to be a blessing.

The church can forget its mission. We can forget to pray or read the scriptures. We can forget the importance of Sabbath time or the value of being in a fellowship experience like CLUs where we find love, support and encouragement to walk closer with Jesus.

While arranging some books in my library I came across an 1892 Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church. This book was a gift from my mother’s library. While scanning through the Discipline I read from the section on Qualifications and Work, paragraph 118 -119:

This means of grace are either Instituted or Prudential.

The Instituted are:

  1. Prayer: private, family, and public.
  2. Searching the Scriptures: Reading, constantly, some part of every day.
  3. The Lord’s Supper: Do you use this at every opportunity?
  4. Fasting: Do you use as much abstinence and fasting every week?
  5. Christian conference: Are you convinced how important and how difficult it is to order your conversation aright?

The Instituted means of grace is a reminder of the tendency of all humans to be forgetful. We need constant support and practice to live out what we believe.

In South Georgia, some of the ways we seek to counter this tendency to forget how to grow in our faith walk are listed below:

  1. Affirm and reward our clergy – and in the near future our laity and congregations – through the Five Star Loving Accountability System.
  2. Emphasizing the Ten Timeless Values
  3. Developing a Disciple Plan to guide your discipleship journey
  4. Joining a CLU (Christlike Love Unit) for support and encouragement to grow in grace.
  5. Our transition plan will include smaller clusters where congregations, clergy and laity can find support.

In South Georgia we are structuring our lives to never forget to have healthy responses to God’s loving grace through Jesus Christ.

Until next time, remember – God’s will for us is good. We must do the rest.

Growing a Christlike World.

With love,

James R. King, Jr.
