On the heart of your Bishop - November

November 04, 2013

Hello, beautiful people of South Georgia!

My greeting comes with love and thanksgiving for you, giving praise to God always for the way we are in ministry together. The mission did not begin with us. We are standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. Now that our awesome God has included us as a part of a divine plan, it is our purpose and joy to move forward making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. And we can see signs of God’s kingdom here on earth as we grow a Christlike world.

Growing a Christlike world is as easy as ABC:

    A. Disciple Plan – Ten Timeless Values

    B. Project Turnaround – focus on Stewardship and Evangelism

    C. Five Star Loving Accountability System (LAS).

Are you in a CLU?
More and more Christians in the South Georgia Annual Conference are forming CLUs - Christlike Love Units. CLUs are a way to experience Jesus Christ weekly through love, support and encouragement. This experience is for clergy and laity. A CLU takes the unrealistic expectation away that the pastor, staff and a few lay persons have the total responsibility of feeding and nurturing the membership of a congregation with the love of Jesus Christ.  When three or four Christians meet weekly with the primary mission of having an ongoing personal experience with Jesus Christ, the entire church family eventually grows into the best place on earth. If you are not in a CLU, go to your pastor or District Superintendent for information on how to get started. You can also purchase the book “CLU” from Cokesbury or my blog ( Start a CLU today!

Vision - Experience and Time
My daily prayer is that more and more Christians will have a vision of God’s kingdom coming on earth as in heaven. Unfortunately, too many Christians either do not possess a vision of the future at all or have visions that are far too small. What kind of world is being formed through your faith in God?

Having a vision of God’s kingdom growing here on earth gives energy and urgency to our need to experience what the love of Jesus is like in a personal way. Hopefully, this will be provided by the church in a variety of ways and I know this is the target goal of a CLU. It is most important to remember that it will take time to witness full transformation of a congregation, family, conference or a denomination.

Sometimes our clergy move too frequently before the church culture has been formed anew with lay persons deeply committed to practice their baptismal responsibly. Without a discipleship culture being formed, our hope nerves grow weak for the world to be transformed.  It is so vital to love each other through conflicts by being a forgiving person who will continue to communicate positively. Join me in prayerfully discerning when it is time to move and when it time to stay because it takes time to develop the trusting relationship and grow the vision.

Communicating more
I am excited about new and fresh ways to share my thoughts with you as a Bishop. In addition to the Annual Conference session, the Advocate ( and clergy and laity days in the district, I’ve created an active blog and am “tweeting” on Twitter. These are some new ways I have chosen to share my thoughts with you.

I love capturing ministry activities through pictures and sometimes will share with you as well. Follow me as I tweet at or visit my blog at

Growing a Christlike World

With love,

Your Bishop,
