Hello, beautiful people of South Georgia!

Years ago, while serving as the director of a Wesley Foundation, I was blessed to work as the team chaplain of a college basketball team. I would often find myself reminding discouraged basketball players who did not get playing time in a game, “Listen, your time is coming. The light will turn green and your name will be called to go in the game and you need to make sure your attitude is right so you can play your best once the opportunity presents itself.”

This season in the Christian year reminds us that the light is getting ready to turn green for us to receive Jesus in our lives. We need to be ready or we will miss an opportunity to receive and share him with others. Are you prepared to receive Jesus Christ?

John the Baptist tells us what we must do to receive Jesus who is the best picture of God and God’s will for us.

You must let go of the things that are not of God and God’s Kingdom. That means that hurt that has led to anger must be addressed and dissolved. Hate has to be softened by the same grace that God provides for us until it has been reshaped into Christlike love. The prejudice that blocks relationships has to shift from unhealthy teachings to a deeper revelation provided by the Holy Spirit. This makes space for people we have not really understood.

Hear again the message of John in Luke 3:4-6 as he repeated the words from Isaiah:
“Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation.”

Hearing this message from John anew, begin to prepare your heart right now by praying something like this:

O loving and Holy God, I acknowledge in this moment that you are my all and all and are worthy to be praised and obeyed.

Give me a clean heart and mind. Forgive me for holding on to my pain and power issues more than your love and mercy.

Remove from me anything and everything that blocks me from receiving the fullness of your grace in the gift of my Lord and Savior. I will be sure to glorify your name by loving you and others in all that I do and say. In Jesus Christ name I pray.

Beautiful people, prepare for Jesus to come in your life as you join in growing a Christlike world.

I’m tweeting messages to encourage you! Read them at

In addition to sharing thoughts and photos on Twitter and my blog I now plan to share a devotional thought called My Devotional Takeaway

Until next time, remember – God’s will for us is good. We must do the rest.

Growing a Christlike world.

With love,

Your Bishop,
James R. King, Jr.
