What's the big deal about another new year?

January 01, 2014

Hello, beautiful people of South Georgia!

For so many people around the world, the beginning of another new year is a big deal. Young and old alike can name various reasons why the New Year is so special to them. Below are some of my thoughts about why another new year is a wonderful moment in time to celebrate.

The first reason is grace.

It takes a just a little while on earth for most to realize that life is frail. When we have given our best effort to live or acknowledge that we have not given our best effort and yet are blessed to have life, that is grace. This blessing beyond what we can do to guarantee our physical existence on earth is the gift called grace. Many who by their own might and strength would have preferred to have a longer life are not here in flesh and blood to do so. Also, many can recall accidents and incidents where a moment sooner or later would have destroyed their life. Except for the grace of God they are still here on earth.

When we start counting blessings over our lives during the last year, we are grateful for grace and just want to sing and shout. The psalmist captures an appropriate response to grace in Psalm 103:2: “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”

With life you have opportunities.

You have a chance to exercise options. You can make adjustments. Have you been eating like you know you should? Have you been as loving as you know you should? Have you made commitments like you know you should?

Your resolutions flow during the beginning of the New Year in part because you want to get better. You want to improve and you know you have the opportunity to make changes in your life. Living at the beginning of the New Year reminds you that you can really be alive! What an opportunity!

You are on this earth for a reason.

Your life has meaning and purpose. Your special gifts and talents are not accidents. You can develop your skills and focus on goals to glorify God and help others.

What about reoccurring dreams that continue to nudge you to move forward on what you really want to do in life? What happened to the promises you made to God, family and friends? Are you living the life you know God wants you to live? The New Year is a time to dust off your dreams, pull the covers off your neglected promises, and walk boldly into the life God created you to live. This New Year is your time to truly live a life of grace filled with opportunities and purpose. This New Year really is a big deal!

Announcing the six District Superintendents

Many of you are aware that the Annual Conference decided last year to reduce the number of districts in the South Georgia Conference from nine to six. This change will begin at the end of the 2014 annual conference session. I will announce the six District Superintendents on Jan. 31, 2014.

I will tweet ( the names of the six district superintendents and post them on my blog ( at 11 a.m. on Jan. 31, 2014. At 4 p.m. on the same day you will be able to see the names of the six district superintendents on our South Georgia webpage,

The South Georgia Conference is being designed to be new in 2014. It is my prayer that all we do will give glory to God as we grow the kingdom of God on earth. May you continue to experience numerous blessings as a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ in the New Year.
