Mrs. Frances Fitzgerald

December 02, 2013

Mrs. Frances Perry Fitzgerald passed away peacefully at Arbor Acres Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013. She was born August 31, 1924, in Wingate, NC to Zeb and Sarah Perry. She lost her parents at a young age and was raised by her beloved Aunt Fronie Perry. Frances was a graduate of Wingate High School and attended Wingate College. At Wingate College she met the love of her life and husband of 56 years, Ernest A. Fitzgerald (former Bishop of the North and South Georgia Conferences when they were still combined). Ernest predeceased Frances in 2001. Frances graduated from Appalachian State University and taught in Jackson County, at Webster High School. She worked as a dietitian at Duke Hospital, while Ernest attended Duke Divinity School. Frances was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren and will be remembered by her family as a hardworking and exceptionally loving mother and wife who was always proud of her family and was their strongest advocate. She was a devoted minister's and bishop's spouse, playing an integral part in all the churches they served. She held district and local offices with the United Methodist Women, was president of minister's spouses' organizations, was on the advisory Board of the Heath Department, and was a Trustee of Greensboro College. She was elected President of the Bishops' Spouses Association shortly after Ernest was elected to the Episcopacy. Frances loved flowers and was an excellent seamstress and pianist. She considered herself very fortunate to have traveled the world on behalf of United Methodism. She loved her many friends and never met a stranger. Frances is survived by her son, James Boyd Fitzgerald (Jimmy), her daughter, Patricia Fitzgerald Poole (Patty) and husband Charles, three grandchildren, James Kevin Fitzgerald and wife Iva, Elizabeth Megan Poole, and Amy Kathleen Poole, and great granddaughter, Audrey Ava Fitzgerald. Frances' family sends a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Fitzgerald Place for their constant and loving care. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Centenary United Methodist Church. Interment will take place at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons immediately following the service. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12:30 pm in the church auditorium. Memorials may be made to Arbor Acres, Greensboro College, or a charity of the donor's choice . Online condolences may be made through www.salemfh.com
