Mrs. Frances Ramsey

Frances Smith Ramsey, 89, of Columbus, Georgia died Thursday, March 30, 2017, at Gentiva Hospice.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 2, 2017, at St. Luke United Methodist Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Macon on Monday, April 3. Rev. Robert Beckum, Rev. Keith Goodlett, and Rev. Cindy Garrard officiated.

Mrs. Ramsey was born June 16, 1927, in Macon, GA, the daughter of Charles and Walton Wigins Smith. She graduated from Miller High School in Macon and from Wesleyan College (1949). Mrs. Ramsey continued her studies and received her Master’s Degree in Christian Education from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.

Before her marriage, she served as the Director of Christian Education for the First UMC of West Point, GA and Mulberry Street UMC in Macon. Mrs. Ramsey later taught English literature and was also a librarian for four years in Tifton, GA. She served and worked with all of the churches of which her husband, Dr. Gilbert L. Ramsey, was pastor, including Adel First UMC, Pittman Park, Statesboro, Tifton UMC, Porterfield UMC, Albany, St. Paul and St. Luke UMC in Columbus, and the Savannah and Columbus Districts of the South Georgia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.

In her early years, Mrs. Ramsey worked with the youth serving as youth counselor. Her last years of working were involved with the visitors and new members welcome committee of St. Luke. She was instrumental in the growth of the fellowship dinners at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Columbus and a member of St. Luke’s Adelphian Study Club as well as several garden clubs. She was a volunteer at Callaway Gardens for 13 years, working in the Sibley Center and the Butterfly Center. Mrs. Ramsey was also an active volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program.

Mrs. Ramsey was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. Gilbert L. Ramsey; sisters, Ella Mae Smith and Ruth Smith Cooper; and her brother, Lewis Y. Smith. Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Ramsey Hatch (Jay A.); son, Gilbert Lee Ramsey, Jr. (Mary Leslie); and three grandchildren, Ashley Frances Aldrich (Ethan), Shelley Ramsey Johnson (Patrick), and Luke Ramsey; and a great-grandson, Hudson Aldrich.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Luke UMC, The Open Door Community House of Columbus, or a charity of your choice in memory of Mrs. Ramsey.
