Mrs. Janis Kenney

Janis Celeste Roberson Kenney, 77, passed away Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, after a lifetime of service to others in education and in ministry.

She was born in Appling County, Ga., and raised in Glynn County/Brunswick, Ga.

Mrs. Kenney graduated with honors from Glynn Academy High School in 1956.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Georgia in 1960 with a specialty in mathematics.

During the summer of 1959, Mrs. Kenney took part in a missions trip to Camaguey, Cuba.

In 1961, Mrs. Kenney received a Master of Christian Education from Candler School of Theology, Emory University.

During this time, Mrs. Kenney was both Director of Christian Education and Financial Secretary at St. James United Methodist Church, Atlanta, Ga.

While here, she met and married her husband, the Rev. James Calvin Kenney Sr. in July 1962.

In 1972, Mrs. Kenney received her Master of Science in Education from Valdosta State College.

While raising four children, she enjoyed a 30-year career as a high school mathematics teacher.

In 1983, she received specialty training in work with gifted students.

In 1995, Mrs. Kenney retired from teaching.

She and her husband Jim, a United Methodist minister, served churches in seven of the then nine districts of the South Georgia Conference. Most recently she was a member of Jekyll Island UMC.

Mrs. Kenney is remembered for her love of music, which began with participation in high school and college glee clubs and continued with active involvement in church choirs. Her Christian influence was appreciated as Chair of the South Georgia Conference (UMC) Committee on Missions as well as member of several district and conference level Council on Ministries groups.

As an active member of the United Methodist Women (UMW), she held leadership roles on conference and district leadership teams.

Mrs. Kenney is survived by her husband of 53 years and by three of her four children: son, James Calvin Kenney Jr. of Brunswick, Ga.; two daughters, Celeste Marie Kenney of Brunswick, Ga., and Carole Kenney Lee (Tom) of Willow Springs, Ill.; daughter-in-love, Janet Mabry Kenney Jacobs (David) of Opelika, Ala.; grandson, Andrew James Kenney of Birmingham, Ala.; and granddaughter, Caitlyn Kristina Lee of Willow Springs, Ill.

Mrs. Kenney was preceded in death by son, Christopher Edwin Kenney; as well as brother, Arvis Roberson; and parents, Louis Edwin (L.E.) and Mildred Johns Roberson of Jekyll Island, Ga.

The memorial service for Janis Celeste Roberson Kenney was held on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at Brunswick First United Methodist Church.
