August 17, 2015
Rev. Julian Lester Tucker, Sr., 83, of Jesup, Ga., passed away at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, after an extended illness. The Duval County, Fla. native had lived in the South Georgia area most of his life and was the youngest of five sons born to the late John Clifford and Beulah Smith Tucker. He was the first boy in Georgia to become the National Winner in Forestry for the 4H Club with his discovery using chemical stimulants to increase the gum yield from pine trees. He served as President of the Tift County FH Club and Vice Governor for the State 4H Organization and graduated from Fitzgerald High School in 1950. He attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College for two terms and graduated from Young Harris in 1952 where he met and married the love of his life, Martha Dean Wright of LaGrange, Ga., and they became the proud parents of four children: Julie Dean Cole of Hiawassee, Ga.; Joy Denise Bond of Pittsboro, N.C.; Julian Lester Tucker, Jr. (deceased); and Charles Frederick Tucker, both of Jesup, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Julian graduated from Georgia Southern with a Bachelor of Science in History and then attended Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. He served as Chaplain of the Youth Football Association and enjoyed golfing, quail hunting, fishing, reading, but above all – preaching. He loved people and was energized by the opportunity to serve those in need. Julian served as an active Methodist minister for over 50 years, which included being pastor at Jesup First United Methodist Church, Akin Memorial United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant, Georgia and Bethel United Methodist Church in Appling County, Georgia. He served the South Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church, served on the District Committee on Ordained Ministry, served as Chairman of the Local Pastor Committee and on the Board of Evangelism.

Services were held on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015 at Jesup First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tucker Lewis, Rev. Willie Beasley, and Rev. Byron Scott officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Julian Tucker Scholarship Fund, Jesup First United Methodist Church, 205 E. Cherry Street, Jesup, GA 31546.
