Bishop Bryan: A Prayer for Peace

June 13, 2018
Bishop Bryan offers his prayers following the June 12 Summit of US and North Korean leaders in Singapore:

I join all United Methodists in praying that this week’s summit between the leaders of North Korea and the United States will turn out to be a first step on the path to a more peaceful and secure future in the region. We pray for God’s unseen but ever present hand to guide those involved in negotiations so that their efforts may accomplish far more than they could ask or imagine.
Let us join in this prayer:
O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family, take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts, break down the walls that separate us, unite us in bonds of love, and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth. We pray especially for those involved in the current negotiations. Through your Holy Spirit, O Lord, use their work to guide the nations of the world into the way of justice and truth. We pray in the name of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In addition to this prayer, I also encourage us to read and reflect upon the paragraph 165 of The Book of Discipline 2016. The title of that paragraph is “The World Community.”  Like so many paragraphs in The Book of Discipline, this section takes us beyond the superficial and enables us to grasp the deeper meaning of what it means to be global Christians in today’s world. Many of the sentences in paragraph 165 easily become prayers that we offer to God as we read that section.
As United Methodists we dedicate ourselves to peace throughout the world, to the rule of justice and law among nations, and to individual freedom for all people of the world. We believe in the present and final triumph of God’s Word in human affairs and gladly accept our commission to manifest the life of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the world.

Alive Together in the World,

Lawson Bryan
