Your direction – not your intentions – determines your destination.
At the church where Anne and I serve, we talk a lot about our spiritual life as a journey. We have people at all points on the path. Many of our people would say they haven’t decided to start their journey yet but are coming just to see what all the fuss is about. We, of course, recognize prevenient grace at work. Last week we baptized 20 people who wanted their friends and family to know they have responded to God’s call on their life and are committed to the journey. Justifying grace on display for all to see.
This summer we started a “PIT Crew.” We got the term from my friend Dorsia, and it stands for “Pastors In Training.” There are 12 people in this group. One is a young pastor, one a youth pastor, one a CPA, one started a non-profit, one runs a recovery home, a couple are teachers, one is retired, and the rest are business people, but all are seeking to live into their calling to the ministry of reconciliation because they have been reconciled. Sanctifying grace in full gear.
Far more important than where you are on your journey is the direction in which you are headed. If you are headed in the right direction, you will eventually arrive. The direction determines the destination, not your intentions.
Most of us are impatient and we want what we want now. There are a few of us who are inspired by the challenge that the gap between what is and what should be creates. However, most of us see the gap and become discouraged. It seems too far. It will take too long. It seems impossible. So we just give up. Give people hope by constantly reminding them that on their spiritual journey the direction they are moving is more important than where they currently are on the journey. Small steps consistently taken in the same direction will eventually take you a great distance.
