Someone complained that John Wesley was getting rich by preaching all across England. He replied, “For what price would you preach with all your might, not in an easy manner, 18 or 19 times every week, and this throughout the year? What shall I give you to travel seven or eight hundred miles, in all weather, every two or three months? For what salary will you abstain from all other diversions than doing good and praising God? I am mistaken if you would not prefer strangling to such a life, even with thousands of gold and silver.”
Wesley went on to ask the question, “To whom am I to leave all this imagined wealth? … If I leave behind me 10 pounds (above my debts and my books), you and all mankind bear witness against me, that I lived and died a thief and a robber.”
