Salem UMC (Americus) - Northwest

History

Salem UMC is the oldest Methodist Church in Sumter County. It grew out of worship services held in member's homes in 1836. The first meeting place was a brush arbor which was replaced with a log cabin made of split longleaf pine used for all denominations. The log cabin was torn down in 1844, to be replaced by a large sawed lumber church which served the community until 1895. At that time, the present structure was constructed. Sunday school rooms and a social hall have been added. For several decades, this church was in the Americus District but, in 1968, a parsonage was built and the church became a station.
