Job Description: Director of Youth Ministries

Classification: Full-Time, Salaried, Exempt per Staff-Parish Relations Committee
Reports To: Senior Pastor
Hours: 40 hours +/- per week (schedule may vary)

Purpose: The Director of Youth Ministries will provide leadership, vision, and direction for all aspects of the student ministry at Wesley. Under the supervision of the senior pastor and in line with the goals of the Church Council, the Director of Youth Ministries will lead, mentor, disciple and serve students and their families for the flourishing of faith.

  • Skills, Attributes, Education, Experience
    • Training, education, and experience as determined by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee
    • Proven experience as a youth director or relevant role
    • Expert interpersonal and public communication skills
    • Must feel called by God to the ministry of youth
    • Knowledgeable and proficient in directing youth activities, studies, trips, service projects, and related endeavors
    • Excellent moral character, dependable, trustworthy, maintains a high level of confidentiality and discretion 
    • Self-motivated, strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and meet changing deadlines
    • Superior interpersonal skills, excellent communicator, friendly, engaging
    • Must work well with other staff members and demonstrate flexibility in all areas of ministry
    • Scheduling flexibility to include evenings and weekends
    • Must demonstrate a capability, willingness, and desire to integrate into the culture of Wesley UMC and actively participate in the life and ministry of the church while balancing energy between worship, education, and fellowship
    • Must be willing to work in support of the mission and vision of the church
  • Mental – Requires a high degree of mental acuity to plan and execute complex elements of administrative and youth-related responsibilities, including, but not limited to: focus on complex organizational tasks; supervise and ensure the safety of youth; effectively manage a classroom, student instruction, worship, and activities
  • Physical – Must have the ability to:
    • Maintain a stationary position for prolonged periods (e.g., during services)
    • Perform walking, standing, forward bending, stooping, crouching (e.g., to navigate the building; conduct activities and events; position/reposition furniture and equipment, staging, and other movable objects)
    • Have mobility to supervise/participate in physically demanding youth activities and ensure the safety of youth
    • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
    • Ascend/Descend stairs (to enter/exit dais, stage, sound booth, Chancel areas)
  • Manual Dexterity – To participate in physically demanding youth activities; record written information; operate office, sound, computer, and musical equipment; position/reposition various items as mentioned above
  • Audible Demands – To detect and discern sounds to effectively supervise and ensure the safety of youth, communicate with others in person and via telephone, receive verbal instructions  
  • Visual Demands – To supervise and ensure the safety of youth; examine written communications, instructions, and other documents; operate equipment as mentioned above
  • Environmental – Church environment with lighting and climate control; frequently works in outdoor conditions
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with all provisions set forth in the Wesley UMC Employee Policy Handbook, including, but not limited to: policies, rules and regulations, the Safe Sanctuaries Policy, the Code of Conduct, and the Code of Ethics
  • Consent to a criminal background check in compliance with the Wesley UMC Safe Sanctuaries policy and have no record of criminal conduct that would diminish suitability to perform the job
  • Provide leadership for and function as the primary staff person relating to middle and high school students
  • Oversee the recruitment and training of adult volunteers to work with middle and high school age groups
  • Supervise and direct the work of employees in this area of ministry
  • Plan and implement age-appropriate activities for middle and high school age youth that promote community through fellowship, fun, and faith development, including, but not limited to, a weekly youth worship gathering, trips, retreats, and other special events
  • Develop and oversee an annual youth ministry budget
  • Coordinate fundraising activities that support special youth activities and trips
  • Promote Christian service through age-appropriate service projects
  • Work with other church youth directors to support Fusion, the Youth Workers Association, The Gathering Place, and other ecumenical activities that promote unity among Glynn County churches
  • Coordinate youth activities with other church ministries and staff members
  • Keep a timely and accurate schedule of youth activities on the church calendar
  • Communicate with the congregation and parents about youth activities
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
