Part-Time Youth Pastor - Sylacauga First UMC, AL
Our Story: Sylacauga First United Methodist Church in Sylacauga, Alabama is seeking its next Minister to Youth. This is a part-time position. Sylacauga First has 400 plus members with approximately 45-50 youth people in 6th to 12th grades. The history of the church dates back almost 200 years and the youth ministry and activities for youth have been consistently active for over 50 years. The mission and purpose of Sylacauga First is welcoming disciples by: “Bringing People to Jesus; Building up Believers; and Blessing the World.” The vision for youth ministry is to apply this mission statement to the lives of students and their families within the local community and to help raise up a generation of believers for the kingdom of God. The Opportunity: The minister to youth would be responsible for planning, leading, and growing the current youth ministries while connecting with students in area middle schools and high schools. The minister of youth would be expected to lead the Wednesday evening youth worship service, attend Sunday morning worship services, and connect with youth in Sunday School and special church events. The youth minister would be responsible for planning and implementing Discovery Weekend (a spiritual formation retreat for middle schoolers that engages high school students in leadership.) The minister of youth would also be responsible for planning and implementing a summer mission trip, community service projects, small group studies, and weekend retreats. The youth minister would be actively engaged in the students’ school and community activities. The minister of youth reports directly to the senior pastor while working closely with the director and assistant director of worship and arts, the assistant pastor, and the children’s minister. The minister to youth will also be responsible for recruiting adult volunteers for all activities, and abiding by the Safe Sanctuary Policy as set forth by the church. The Qualifications: We are looking for an individual with a bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in youth ministry or a current seminary student looking to work in youth ministry while in school. Must have excellent communication and relationship skills in working with youth and their parents. Must have planning and organizational skills for ministry events and activities. Must be highly motivated and positive able to encourage others both youth and adults. Must be a committed disciple of Jesus with an active spiritual life. Experience in the United Methodist Church would be highly desirable. It is located approximately 48 miles southeast of Birmingham on Highway 280, in Talladega County with almost 13,000 residents. In 2010 it was listed in the top 100 Best Cities for Young People. Sylacauga boasts a top performing school system, an award winning library, and a medical center ranked in the top ten of Alabama medical facilities. Located near three major lakes and the Talladega National Forest, Sylacauga is a sportsman’s paradise for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreational sports. It is also the home of Blue Bell Creameries.
