A letter to Advocate subscribers

This letter was recently mailed to all South Georgia Advocate subscribers.

Dear Advocate subscriber,

Greetings in the name of Christ.

On Friday, May 31, UMR Communications and the United Methodist Reporter, the publisher and printer of the South Georgia Advocate newspaper, ceased operations due to financial pressures. We were informed just two weeks earlier, and were shocked and saddened to hear the news.

Since then, we have been unable to communicate directly with you as we waited to receive our subscriber list from UMR Communications (UMRC).

With UMRC’s closure, the May 17 issue of the Advocate was our last print edition. Some of the same financial pressures that led to the Wesleyan Christian Advocate’s closure more than four years ago – and that continue to plague the newspaper industry – led to our decision to discontinue the print edition of the newspaper. Continuing to print the paper is not a financially viable option.

The South Georgia Advocate will continue to tell the good news of what God is doing in South Georgia via a free, twice-monthly online version of the Advocate. The digital edition can be accessed at www.sgaumc.org/advocate. A printable PDF file will accompany each online issue so those who don’t have access to a computer may have it printed by someone who does. The news, features, Sunday school lessons, and columns you love will live on in the online South Georgia Advocate.

At the time of their closure, UMRC reported that there is no money available for refunds, so that responsibility now rests with our Annual Conference. As a subscriber, you are entitled to the remaining portion of your subscription, and have two options. You may request a refund of the unused portion of your subscription, or you may consider that unused portion a gift to the Annual Conference.

Subscription refunds will be issued to those who request them, in writing or via email, by September 30, 2013. To request a refund, please send an email or letter with your name, mailing address, subscription renewal date (if known), and phone number to PO Box 20408, St. Simons Island, GA 31522 or kara@sgaumc.org.

We thank you for your patience and support through this difficult transition. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your loyal support and readership. I pray you will continue to read the Conference’s news online.

Grace and peace,
Kara Witherow
Editor, South Georgia Advocate
