Conference remembers, celebrates, and honors during worship services

Before the Conference got down to business, it worshiped together virtually over the course of several days as it remembered, celebrated, and honored South Georgia United Methodists.

Virtual Retiree Recognition

On Tuesday evening, June 1, the Conference gathered virtually to honor these 11 pastors retiring this year:

James Robert Beckum
Remer Logan “Brad” Brady III

It also celebrated with those pastors who have served 50 years in the ministry:
Nathan C. Godley

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven,” said Bishop Bryan during the service. “So, too, there is a time for movement and new adventure, fields of service not yet touched. With love, we send you out in the spirit of John Wesley: may the world be your parish.” Watch the Retirement Recognition service | Watch the 50 Years in Ministry video

Virtual Memorial Service

A Memorial Service for those who have faithfully served the South Georgia Conference was held virtually Thursday evening, June 3 at 7 p.m. Dr. Brad Brady, who retired at the 2021 Annual Conference session, read Romans 16:1-16 and reminded those watching that everyone has a story.

“Every single person has a story,” he said. “Paul lists 27 names in these 16 verses. Each has a story. Each has been a blessing.”

Just as those listed in scripture have stories, so too do the 26 clergy and 18 clergy spouses who passed away this year, Dr. Brady said.

“If we were able to have representatives from all the different churches they’ve served stand and speak, there would be story after story after story about the impact of their ministries. These folks are dear to us. They have a story. And they have an impact that is incalculable.”

Virtual Service of Ordination with Commissioning

The Conference gathered Sunday, June 6 for the virtual Service of Ordination with Commissioning. Along with their families, those being ordained and commissioned gathered at Vineville United Methodist Church in Macon.

Bishop R. Lawson Bryan, episcopal leader of the South Georgia area, preached a message titled, “The Common Call.”

The common call to ministry binds clergy and laity together, Bishop Bryan said.

“You know it’s all about the call,” he said. All the way back to Genesis, “until you have God’s call, you don’t have anything. But when you have the call, you have everything.”

Nothing happens without the call, he said. The prophets are called. Jesus calls fishermen, tax collectors, and women, but it’s always the call.

“That’s what constitutes us, it’s God’s call upon our lives.”

The following individual was ordained as Full Conference Members:
Full Conference Member/Elder
Eric Kyle Mayle
Probationary Members Commissioned for Ordination as Elders
