Bishop R. Lawson Bryan today announced the projected appointment of Dr. Nita Crump to serve as Director of Connectional Ministries, effective June 2018. Rev. Doreen Smalls, pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church in Savannah, will succeed Dr. Crump as the Southwest District Superintendent.

Dr. Crump, currently serving as the Southwest District’s Superintendent, will succeed Dr. Matt Woodbery, who was appointed last year as the Interim Director of Connectional Ministries. Dr. Woodbery’s appointment and Asbury UMC’s pastoral appointment will be announced Sunday, April 22, with the Conference’s other appointments, via the conference website. Any appointments not released this Sunday will be released as soon as they are projected.

These transitions come after a year of Dr. Woodbery studying and assessing the conference’s alignment of resources and needs, Bishop Bryan said.

“I have seen Matt’s passion for Christ, his pastoral heart, and his wealth of organizational expertise, and the same is true for Nita, who has distinguished herself by connecting her district churches with the resources needed for their vitality,” he said. “Her work with our outstanding Connectional Ministries staff will enable the annual conference to benefit from her demonstrated competency in resourcing local churches for fruitfulness. Equally impressive is Doreen, whose background and her past six years of effective leadership as pastor of Asbury UMC have prepared her for work in the district. I look forward to working with Matt, Nita, and Doreen in their new roles in the South Georgia Conference.”

In her four years serving as superintendent of the Southwest District, Dr. Crump has consistently led the district to high levels of apportionment giving and has created events and programs that help resource and connect local churches.

“I am looking forward to continuing the work of resourcing local churches on a broader level across the Annual Conference,” Dr. Crump said. “The Connectional Ministries staff has accomplished great things, and I look forward to joining this team as we work to strengthen and enhance our connection.”

Rev. Smalls has served Asbury UMC in Savannah since 2012. Prior to that appointment she served as an Associate Director in the Office of Connectional Ministries.

“I am excited to serve the Southwest District and the annual conference in a new role and different capacity,” Rev. Smalls said. “I think great things are happening in the Southwest District, so I am happy to come alongside and serve with the local pastors and hopefully do even greater things for the Kingdom of God.”

After appointments have been released on Sunday, local church PPR/SPR chairpersons and other congregational leader may phone their projected pastor to offer a welcome. Site visits by the projected clergy to the newly projected appointment may be planned after May 1.

All appointments are considered firm projections pending the official announcement at the conclusion of the Annual Conference session on June 5.
