Football great John Riley to speak at UMM's annual retreat

The United Methodist Men of the South Georgia Conference will host their annual Spring Retreat April 13 through April 15 at Epworth By The Sea on St. Simons Island.

Gathering under the theme, “Men of God, make a difference,” retreat participants will hear a dynamic and inspirational messages from football great John “Rat” Riley.

“To me, this retreat is another step men can take toward spiritual growth,” said UMM president Chuck Cowart. “I think a lot of times men think that we can grow in the Lord without doing extra things, but most of us need a little extra to pull us up and help us out in our Christian growth.”

The retreat, while a Methodist men’s event, is open to anyone interested in participating.

Beginning with a golf tournament at Brunswick’s Coastal Pines Golf Course at noon on Friday, April 13 and ending after lunch on Sunday, April 15, the retreat is designed to help participants grow spiritually and in fellowship with others.

“The retreat has meant, to me, a lot of new and lasting friendships with men,” Cowart said. “Going to these retreats has also brought me 30-something years of growing in the Lord.”

John Riley, an All Southeastern Conference placekicker for Auburn in 1968 and 1969 who was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 1970, is a challenging, inspirational speaker with a unique, God-given ability to communicate great Biblical truth in a simple, understandable manner.  Riley will deliver the messages on Friday evening, Saturday evening, and Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon, retreat attendees will have an opportunity to participate in service projects in Brunswick.  There will also be an opportunity to join the Fellowship of Christian Farmers, International as they minister to Brunswick residents.

“If men are interested in growing spiritually … come and spend these three days at Epworth,” Cowart said. “It will be a great weekend to get away and get your batteries recharged.”
