Maybe So ... (Aug. 18)

Dear Editor,

Cara Lott complained about our decline in supporting missionaries. She said, “Utmost United Methodist Church has always supported missionaries. I remember the first chicken suppers to start the support of Mamie Southern, our first missionary from Utmost United Methodist Church.  And we have supported a missionary ever since.”

Our pastor, Rev. Mostly Wright, said, “That is correct. We always had a strong mission mindset. However, the focus of mission has change in the past few decades. We have fewer career missionaries. The mission field has changed dramatically”

Will Goforth agreed. He said, “These changes have many facets. People want to be in mission, and have less interest in giving money for someone else’s mission. Notice the rise in Volunteers In Mission and sort term mission events. These are ways people can be in mission without becoming a ‘missionary.’”

This was a revelation to Cara. “I had not seen it this way,” she said. “I was so focused on ‘sending missionaries’ that I hadn’t seen that we are not only sending missionaries, albeit short term or in little doses, but also giving wonderful support. Especially for our youth go on their summer mission work camps.”

Until next time,
