After serving eight years as the South Georgia Conference's lay leader, on Monday, June 3, during the 2013 Annual Conference session, Roy Blackwood passed the torch to Gloria Morgan.
"It’s been a really good experience and I think that we’ve made good progress over the years," said Blackwood, a member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Statesboro. "It has been a growing experience for me, and I have enjoyed working with the laity. I really think the laity are the backbone of the Church."
Morgan, who had previously served as the assistant Conference lay leader, believes that the laity's role is cruicial.
"I’m very passionate about the laity," she said. "I think the laity’s role is the most important … it’s not just the preacher’s responsibility, it’s the laity's, too. The laity have to step up and be a big part of what we’re doing."
