Leola Yvonne Pinder Dennis, 102, of Fort Mill, died Thursday, May 1, 2014 at her home.

Leola was born September 17, 1911, in Key West, Florida, to Preston and Catherine Pinder. Leola had 5 siblings, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.  She was married to William Edwin Dennis, Sr., for 66 years, until his death in 1994. Leola is survived by her twin sons, William Dennis, Jr., and his wife Helen, of Vero Beach, Florida; Willard Dennis and wife Patricia, of Kershaw, South Carolina; her daughter Evelyn Dennis Perry, of Fort Mill and her sister Laurette Russell, of Lake Placid, Florida. She had 10 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

Leola grew up in Islamorada, Florida and recently, in January of 2013, traveled there to revisit her childhood home place, where she had many fond memories, including tomato farming, fishing and sailing with her daddy and swimming any chance she could get. Growing up on the Florida Keys, she lived through the wrath of many hurricanes that left the island in total devastation. She met her late husband William Edwin Dennis, Sr., while he was serving at Matacumbe Methodist Church in Islamorada. They married September 5th, 1929 and shortly after, Edwin was appointed to North/West Palm Beach Church in West Palm Beach, Florida. They served several churches in the Florida Methodist Conference and many churches in the South Georgia Conference before retiring and moving to Fort Mill.

Leola was a devoted Christian wife, mother, grandmother and “Granny” as all of her “great” and “great-great-grandchildren called her.

The service to celebrate Leola’s life will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Pineville United Methodist Church, 110 South Polk Street, Pineville, North Carolina. The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m. at the church.  Following the service at the church, there will be a graveside service held at Good Shepherd Outreach Center (formerly Zoar United Methodist Church), 13611 Zoar Road, Charlotte.

The family would like to give a heart-felt “thank you” to the Hospice Organization for their wonderful care of Leola during her last few months of life.
