Summer camps offer fun, faith for elementary and middle-school students

Temperatures are rising in South Georgia, and with warmer weather come thoughts of vacations, beach trips and summer camps.

With campers set to arrive less than two months, planning and preparation for the South Georgia Conference Summer Camps programs are well under way, says Camp Director Rev. C.J. Harp.

The theme of this year’s camps is “The Deep,” based on Ephesians 3:17b-19, which reads, “And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you'll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ's love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.” (The Message)

“The whole camp experience is going to be geared towards helping kids become more rooted and established in God’s love,” Rev. Harp said.  “We’re going to explore with them the great depths of God’s love for us in Jesus Christ.”

Spending a week at camp away from the familiar routine of home helps children and youth experience God in a fresh, new way, he said.

“In the middle of summer, different is good. Youth like to have a change of scenery in the summer, especially one as nice as Epworth,” Rev. Harp said.  “What ends up happening at summer camp, however, is that God does an internal work in their lives amidst the change of scenery.  Ultimately, camp places children and youth in a unique setting away from home to explore and experience God’s love.”

Held at Epworth By The Sea on St. Simons Island, the 2012 Summer Camps are divided into two age categories.  Mid-high camps, for those entering the sixth through ninth grades, will be offered in two sessions, June 11-15 and June 18-22.  Elementary camps, for those entering fourth through sixth grades, will be offered three times this summer: June 25-29, July 9-13, and July 16-20.  Parents of rising sixth graders can choose which age-level camp – elementary or mid-high – they want their child to attend.

During their week at camp, campers will explore how to build a strong faith in Christ and will learn just how far God goes to pursue a relationship with them. Through small groups, times of worship, in-depth Bible studies and fellowship with other believers, campers will discover the depths of God's joy, love, mercy, and salvation.

They’ll learn these things from the Leadership Team, a group of 15 college students from across Georgia and around the Southeast.  Hailing from the University of Georgia, Berry College, the University of West Georgia, Valdosta State University, Georgia Southern University, Samford University and others, the Leadership Team is a carefully selected group of Christian men and women who will give campers an example of a young adult who is seeking a relationship with God and growing in that relationship.

They will also help provide campers an environment where they will be able to experience God’s presence in a real and tangible way through worship, Bible studies, and small-group devotional time.

Camp is a fun experience, too.  Campers will enjoy the beach, the pool, crafts, games, morning shows, and more.

“Youth experience physical growth spurts during the summer months. The summer camp experience offers them a great and unique opportunity to experience a spiritual growth spurt in a fun, safe environment,” Rev. Harp said.
