Bishop Lawson Bryan has announced appointments for three local church positions effective October 1.
Dr. Tony Caldwell, currently serving as pastor of Montezuma United Methodist Church, will be appointed to Hinesville First United Methodist Church. Rev. Jonathan Beckum, currently serving at Ellaville United Methodist Church and Corinth United Methodist Church, has been appointed to Montezuma UMC. Haynes Martin, a certified candidate currently serving as assistant pastor at Martha Bowman United Methodist Church in Macon, will be appointed to Ellaville/Corinth.
Retired pastor Rev. Dave Hanson has been serving as interim pastor at Hinesville First UMC since Rev. Dale Thornton’s sudden death in June.
"We have seen the power of Christ manifested in the body of Christ,” said Rev. David Thompson, superintendent of the Coastal District. “By coming together, the Bishop, Cabinet, and Hinesville First UMC have and will continue to effectively care for Marlene Thornton. The graciousness and intentionality of care which the congregation has shown has been a blessing to all those who have been involved in this difficult situation. We are excited for the future, hopeful in the present, and building on the treasured past."
Supporting Mrs. Thornton has been Bishop Bryan’s and the Cabinet’s top priority; another has been caring for Hinesville First UMC in their time of grief and helping them discern their next pastoral leadership.
“We are deeply grateful for the life and ministry of Dale Thornton. We are also grateful to Dave Hanson for his leadership during this transition time and pray for Tony and the congregation as they begin a new season together, as well as for Jonathan and Haynes as they make transitions,” Bishop Bryan said.
